May 21, World Day for Cultural Diversity

Following the adoption of UNESCO’s Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity in November 2001, the General Assembly of the United Nations welcomed the main guidelines of its Action Plan and proclaimed May 21 “World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.” For this reason, at the Foundation for Diversity, we want to support this initiative by encouraging all national institutions and organizations to become part of the Diversity Charter. The aim of Cultural Diversity Day is to provide an opportunity to deepen our reflections on the values of cultural diversity and learn to “live better” together. In this regard, the Foundation for Diversity, established by the Alares Foundation and the IEGD, works to become the leading Spanish organization for businesses, institutions, and society as a whole, providing them with the tools necessary to properly manage and integrate diversity. Cultural diversity has been at the heart of UNESCO’s concerns since its creation sixty years ago. For this reason, initiatives such as the Diversity Charter are key to encouraging governments to become involved in this cause. France, Italy, Belgium, and Germany already have organizations dedicated to disseminating the principles of diversity. In Spain, the Foundation for Diversity was established on March 17, 2009. UNESCO has been committed to cultural diversity for almost a decade, promoting a spirit of dialogue and openness that takes into account the risks of homogenization and identity-based withdrawal associated with globalization. Since cultures encompass the arts and letters, as well as ways of life, systems of values, traditions, and beliefs, protecting and promoting their diversity poses a challenge: defending creative capacity through the multiplicity of its tangible and intangible forms, while ensuring peaceful coexistence.
