Today, April 8, International Roma Day is celebrated, a date established at the World Roma Congress held in London in 1971.
During this day, numerous institutions hold events and issue statements recognizing the history, language, and culture of a people that constitutes Europe’s largest and most numerous ethnic minority. In fact, more than 10 million people worldwide make up the Roma community, and of these 10 million, 8 million live in Europe.
The purpose of this day is to call the authorities’ attention to and remind them of the need to try to end the discrimination that this community still often faces, as well as to promote diversity.
Coinciding with this date, on April 5, the European Commission presented the EU Framework for Member States to develop national strategies to help integrate the Roma population through four key areas: education, health, housing, and employment.
