Numerous organizations are observing World Alzheimer’s Day today, a date established to hold informational events and programs about this disease and other dementias in order to raise awareness and sensitize society.
This disease is known as the epidemic of the 21st century because, in Spain alone, more than 600,000 people suffer from it. Some experts predict that by 2025, more than 1,600,000 people will have the disease.
Although Spain’s Dependency Law was enacted in 2007, there is a shortage of resources to care for these people. In fact, 80% of people with Alzheimer’s are cared for by family members or caregivers who lack the training necessary to provide them with proper care.
This observance was established by Alzheimer’s Disease International with the official endorsement of the World Health Organization.
