We did not want to end the year with news like this, but the facts speak for themselves, and it is impossible for our blog not to refer to recent events. In this final week of the year, 6 women have been murdered by their romantic partners, and several other cases remain to be clarified. According to official data, during 2008, 69 women lost their lives at the hands of their partners or former partners.
Shocked by these events, society is demanding greater police and legal protection from the authorities, so that reports do not fall on deaf ears. Despite having new special courts to handle gender-violence cases, the creation of a Ministry of Equality, and awareness campaigns in the media, men who murder women continue to act. One worrying fact is that the number of reports remains low and does not reflect the social reality. Only one quarter of the women murdered this year had filed a report with the courts, and 60% of them were still maintaining a personal relationship with their attackers.
We must be aware that gender-based violence is part of our lives and that at any moment we may experience it directly or indirectly. What is more, we must not forget that the only victims are not the women who appear in the media after losing their lives, but also all those who endure beatings, discrimination, humiliation, and more every day….
