Despite the current economic difficulties, which are in some ways limiting hiring by companies, businesses are increasingly choosing to hire people with disabilities. This is demonstrated by data published in a report by the State Observatory on Disability, which states that 10.3% more contracts were registered between January and February of this year than during the same period in 2010.
This upward trend has been emerging since 2008, when, as a result of the crisis, employment figures for people with disabilities hit rock bottom. During the first two months of this year, exactly 9,562 contracts were signed with people with disabilities, compared with 8,670 signed during the same period in 2010. Considering February alone, the figure reached 4,954, representing an increase of 11.5% over 2010 and 29.4% over 2009.
In addition, this report specifies the exact number of each type of contract that companies offer to people with disabilities. Specifically, 2,597 contracts were permanent, while 6,953 were temporary, replacement, internship, or training contracts.
Furthermore, the data provided by the Observatory highlights that the conversion of temporary contracts into permanent employment increased by 35% compared with February 2010.
It is worth remembering that in Spain, the legislation currently in force regarding disability, LISMI, is mandatory for all companies with more than 50 employees. For this reason, and with the aim of encouraging the hiring of people with disabilities, the 1st Disability&Employment Fair in Barcelona has been organized by the Sí Somos Capaces Association and will take place next June.
