European Conference on Active and Healthy Ageing

Last week, Logroño hosted the European Conference on Active and Healthy Ageing, a meeting that concluded that active and healthy ageing not only improves older people’s quality of life but also generates economic benefits. The conference attendees, including the Director General of IMSERSO, Purificación Causapié, argued that promoting and implementing measures that encourage active and healthy ageing reduces healthcare costs, delays dependency, and fosters greater social cohesion. During the congress, the goal of declaring 2012 the “European Year for Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity” was reiterated. In addition, it was announced that a White Paper on Older People is currently being prepared, which will establish the basis for designing action plans so that communities can work together from a global perspective on this issue. There is no doubt that the profile of older people is changing nowadays, as they have higher levels of education and cultural interests, as well as a better quality of life, enabling them to remain more active. Therefore, it is necessary to promote volunteer activities and new technologies to prevent dependency and safeguard their personal autonomy.
