The integration of people with disabilities into the workforce is vital to achieving equal opportunities in society, prompting us to take a closer look at the problem causing this imbalance. For this reason, the Alares Barometer: Disability and Employment has launched a new survey that is currently available at www.discaempleo.com , aimed at companies, which will allow us to identify the causes contributing to this employment instability. The Alares Barometer, a tool provided by the Discaempleo portal, is based on continuous analysis of the labor market for people with disabilities and has collected information on employment realities and needs, both of people with disabilities and of the companies that hire them. Its main objective is to obtain statistical data on the employability and quality of employment of people with disabilities, both quantitatively and qualitatively. This analysis makes it possible to identify potential causes and effects and thus implement improvement mechanisms that guarantee effective equal opportunities. The latest survey conducted through this same portal has revealed the lack of employment stability among people with disabilities. In this survey, conducted among more than 600 people through the Alares Barometer during 2013/2014, 64% reported having signed temporary contracts, all of them lasting less than four months. In addition, 21% stated that their time in the same job was less than six months, while only 15% reported remaining employed at the same company for more than one year. All of this demonstrates that recruiting people with disabilities requires strategic planning, ranging from knowledge of the different disabilities in order to eliminate stereotypes to competency-based selection, recruitment sources for finding the ideal candidate, adapting the position and, in some cases, integrating the person into the work team. Managing this planning contributes to successful recruitment and, consequently, benefits both the company and the employee. Fundación Alares helps companies promote the employment inclusion of people with disabilities while also providing specialized employment training for this group. Hiring people with disabilities generates highly significant social benefits that help these individuals achieve independence, thereby enabling their full and effective participation in society, as established by the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
