Today, October 1, World Older Persons Day is celebrated. In our country, 22% of the population consists of people over 60, making Spain the fifteenth country in the world with the largest elderly population.
In view of this significant demographic change, which in some ways is leading to higher rates of dependency, the Dependency Act—legislation that came into force on January 1, 2007—has become vitally important.
With the aim of studying the current situation regarding the implementation of this law, the studies department of Fundación Alares presented the report “Current Status of the Implementation of the Dependency Act and Proposals for Improvement: Progress and Challenges in People’s Quality of Life.”
The UN forecasts that by 2050, the population of people over 60 will approach 2 billion.
