According to AFEM, an organization that brings together more than one hundred Special Employment Centers, people with intellectual disabilities are the ones who most drive up unemployment rates. In fact, 60 percent of these people are unemployed.
Special Employment Centers were created with the aim of training and assisting people with disabilities so that they can later integrate into the mainstream labor market. Their workforce is made up of 70% people with disabilities.
These centers generally focus on activities such as hospitality, catering, and organic farming, among others, because these individuals have low levels of education and training, which to some extent prevents them from performing jobs requiring higher qualifications.
In this regard, AFEM is calling on the Government to ensure that the current education system pays more attention to young people with intellectual disabilities by promoting job training and supporting the development of a comprehensive, coordinated action strategy.
