This is one of the findings presented in a report produced by the Alzheimer’s Foundation Spain in collaboration with the Complutense University of Madrid.
These caregivers are usually, in most cases, the patient’s daughter or spouse. They typically spend an average of six years caring for their family member, having to give up their leisure time, social relationships, and even their work outside the home, which in some ways leads them to experience a state of social exclusion.
The study also shows that although most former caregivers acknowledge that the death of their family member represents a respite for both the patient and the caregiver, many report suffering from severe anxiety because they were not prepared to cope with the loss. Specifically, according to the study’s data, 35% experience an episode of depression and 33% have an anxiety disorder.
In addition, the results of this report show that former caregivers have a much more negative assessment of their mental health compared with the general population of the same age.
