The cost of absenteeism in Spain due to occasional causes stood at 1.15% of GDP

For companies, workplace absenteeism is one of the most difficult problems to tackle. According to data from a study conducted by PIMEC, in 2010 the absenteeism rate in Spain stood at 5.07%, with the industrial sector having the highest absenteeism rate (6.2%), followed by the service sector (4.9%) and the construction sector (4.1%). Absenteeism is a serious problem for Spanish organizations, particularly medium-sized and large companies. Although there is awareness that this problem exists, measures are scarce, and the few that are implemented consist of monitoring and sanctions that can harm the workplace climate and consequently affect productivity. And yet, even fewer organizations are committed to developing work-life, family, and personal-life balance programs and measures, which employees value highly and which also help improve their level of engagement with the company’s objectives.
