Gender inequality, an education problem
A report presented by the European Commission and carried out by the independent company NESSE revealed yesterday that the problem of workplace inequalities between the sexes has its roots in education, that is, the traditional education system itself, with its obsession with dividing and directing young children into two large homogeneous groups, boys and girls, is the cause of the difference in opportunities between them.
The main findings of this research demonstrate several aspects in terms of educational, economic, and social inequality: “A more humane, non-hierarchical, and respectful school system is essential to prevent early school dropout,” with children of working-class families also facing a greater risk of dropping out.
As for higher education, gender inequality is focused on the subjects each gender tends to study, since while men prefer areas such as construction, science, and engineering, women predominate in the humanities, the arts, and fields related to care and assistance.
Finally, the report explains that one of the key factors is the role played by various social agents, such as family, friends and peers, and teachers, in either reinforcing or dismantling gender-stereotyped behaviors and expectations. Gender equality is a long process that must be promoted from the beginning of schooling, the experts concluded.
