World Youth Day is already underway, and to ensure that everyone can enjoy the event, the Alares Foundation has trained more than one hundred young volunteers to coordinate and assist people with disabilities.
The one hundred team leaders will be among the 25,000 volunteers accredited for WYD 2011 and will support and provide information to people with disabilities attending the event with Pope Benedict XVI.
To train these volunteers, the Alares Foundation, in collaboration with the Madrid Vivo Foundation and the WYD Organization, developed a training program throughout the year so that they could learn about the resources available to help young people with disabilities and how to use them.
In addition, when assisting people with disabilities, training must be “much more specialized” because the level of support required varies depending on the degree and type of disability, according to the Alares Foundation. Therefore, the training program aimed to give volunteers a general understanding of disability and teach them how to provide appropriate support for each need.
The Alares Foundation’s team of experts also prepared a basic manual containing practical information for the occasion.
