Employment contracts for people with disabilities rose to 20,120 in the first four months of 2011, eight percent more than in the same period of the previous year, according to Health, Social Policy and Equality Minister Leire Pajín during a meeting of the Council of the Royal Board on Disability, chaired by Queen Sofía.
"The Global Strategy for Action on the Employment of People with Disabilities has borne and continues to bear fruit: in 2010, 60,000 new contracts were signed, 20 percent more than the previous year. This trend was confirmed in the first four months of 2011, with 20,120 contracts for people with disabilities, an increase of 8.1 percent compared with the same period of the previous year," the minister said.
Regarding employment, she also highlighted other government initiatives, such as allocating seven percent of public-sector job vacancies to people with disabilities, reserving two percent for people with intellectual disabilities, and the Royal Decree on urgent measures to improve employment and reform active employment policies, among others.
Pajín highlighted initiatives such as the Royal Decree on Accessible Voting, approved last March, the Comprehensive Culture for All Strategy, and the approval of the draft Comprehensive Law on Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination.
